Racing the Planet - News
COMING UP
RacingThePlanet Planet: Madagascar - August 2014
We had an awesome response to our request for suggestions on where to hold the Roving Race 2014, so thank you to everyone who got in touch.
We now have the very great pleasure of inviting you to join us on the most unique island in the world in 2014. That's right, we're off to the southern Indian Ocean to race in Madagascar.
An astonishing 90% of the biodiversity of the island is found nowhere else in the world, and the Malagasy culture is a fascinating mix of African and Indonesian. The very first settlers arrived from Borneo some 2000 years ago, followed by Bantu migrants from Africa.
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world with a surprising range of geographical features. It's not going to be all rainforest.
We'll be launching the event website in the coming months and conducting our first recce as well. Read the press release on the event website and stay tuned for more details! Pre-registration is now open.
The Last Desert (Antarctica) 16 - 26 November 2012
It's just three months to go until competitors will be boarding our expedition ship from Ushuaia, Argentina to sail across the choppy Drake Passage to Antarctica. It seems incredible that it's almost two years since South African Ryan Sandes and Croatian Mirjana Pellizzer were crowned 4 Deserts Champions.
Two of our Grand Slammers this year have won the first two races of the year in the men's and women's sections: Vicente Garcia-Beneito of Spain and Anne-Marie Flammersfeld of Germany. However, at The Last Desert they are going to come up against some serious competition for the title and the 4 Deserts Championship crowns. Sixteen competitors are still in the Grand Slam competition, with five of those being part of Team JDRF Born to Run who aim to become the first team to complete the feat.
The expedition team has been assembled. The leader will be Kelvin Murray, a diving and marine survival expert who recently wintered on the continent as part of the British Antarctic Survey. See bios of the RacingThePlanet management team and the ship expedition team.
The course is being planned with a provision being made to camp onshore one night and to include the summiting of a mountain in Antarctica. If permissions are agreed and weather permits, it will be a fantastic experience.
Check out the competitor list, take a peek behind the scenes, and immerse yourself in the photographs from previous editions.
