Dis-Chem Sun City Swim Coming Up in October

The 15th Annual Dis-Chem Sun City Swim is due to take place on Saturday 20th October 2012 with entries opening early in August. Early bird entries will run until Friday 31st August. Once again the swim is expected to kick off the 2012-2013 Open Water swimming season in style.

Dis-Chem and Sun City remain the title sponsors. AVL Solutions will provide the transportation of the race equipment, registration packs, the ever popular goody bags and the numerous spot prizes up to Sun City, Speedo have committed to providing different coloured swimming caps for each event for all entrants as well as Speedo golf shirts to identify helpers, Voltaren will once again present medals to all finishers and Ben Water will hand out bottles of spring water to all competitors exiting the finish area.

The organisers are working hard to ensure that this swim remains the premier family event on the local Open Water Swimming calendar. The venue is surely the best equipped and most beautiful of any swim in South Africa and the water quality and safety standards are unsurpassed. It is considered an event both for the top swimmers and the entire family. Elite swimmers may earn points for the CGA Challenge Series and use their times to qualify for SSA National Events as it will meet all the requirements for Swimming South Africa sanctioning.

The program has something for everyone consisting of a 3km followed by 4 age group 1500m swims every hour from 09h30. An untimed fun swim of 600m for all ages takes place at 13h30. Swimmers may swim this event with swimming aids if required. Disabled swimmers compete in the last timed swim of the day, and a team event will be computed from the times swum in events 2-5.

Following on from the use of the ChampionChip timing system at 4 open water swims in Gauteng during the 2011-2012 season, the Dis-Chem Sun City Swim has committed to using this system in 2012 in its entirety. Each swimmer purchases a chip which is registered to that swimmer for life. It can be used at any other sporting event that makes use of ChampionChip Timing including swims, runs, cycle races and triathlons. All results for each participant are available on the ChampionChip website and each entrant will receive a sms on completion of the race.

Apart from being a fun day out for the family, all swimmers will be contributing to a number of charitable initiatives. The 2 swim charities are: The Kidney Beanz Trust, which cares for the children and families of children awaiting kidney transplants and Little Eden, a home for severely mentally handicapped persons in Edenvale. The organisers donate R5 of each pre-entry fee to these charities and entrants are asked to make voluntary donations. The Dis-Chem Foundation has agreed once again to match the swimmers voluntary donations Rand for Rand.

The swim employs the help of Gauteng Masters Swimming Clubs and Gauteng Lifesaving on the day and in this way promotes open water swimming and water safety in the community. In addition the swim arranges a number of Caregivers Water Safety Awareness Courses during the year to reduce the incidence of drowning around the home.

Entries will be taken either online by credit card or by faxed/scanned entry with direct deposit. For online entries, detailed information and an entry form go to www.suncityswim.co.za
