FEAT - Ready for an adventure? Prepare [your mind] now
Every adventure starts as an idea, one that arises from something you’ve seen or heard – an online video or presentation - or from a desire to visit a certain country. Like a snowball rolling down a hill this idea gathers momentum. It becomes tangible through planning and training until – BOOM – you’re on your adventure. A day of hiking, a local weekend mountain-bike tour with friends or paddle lessons... these adventures all begin upstairs – in your mind - with an inspired idea.
Fascinating Expedition & Adventure Talks (FEAT) takes to the stage for the fourth time in early October. This one-night evening of talks by South African adventurers is the ultimate armchair adventure. Mountains and rivers, local and foreign lands, short adventures and long expeditions - FEAT captures these journeys and experiences through its dynamic and fast-paced, seven-minute talk format.
Nine speakers will take to the stage to speak about their recent adventures. Talks are captivating, informative and the audience walks away with far more than a good night out.
“For one of our speakers, just being in the audience at a FEAT event was life-changing – you’ll hear from her on the night. I’ll let you in on the speaker line-up next month,” says Lisa de Speville. She created the FEAT concept in 2010 and organises the South African FEAT events.
The annual FEAT Award was introduced last year and this cash prize was awarded to three Capetonians for their Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) adventure. Regardt Botes, Christo Smeda and Flip du Plessis were newcomers to the sport of SUP when they undertook a seven-day adventure and successfully paddled around the island of Zanzibar.
“Blessed with fine weather, the three friends made good progress and took hundreds of idyllic photographs. You’ll see some these images and hear about their adventure at FEAT in October,” says de Speville.
Applications for the 2012/2013 FEAT Award are open. Entry forms are available on the FEAT website and they must be submitted by Wednesday, 29 August 2012. The winner will be announced at FEAT.
"Start thinking about that adventure now," says de Speville. "And maybe FEAT can help you achieve it."
FEAT will be held on Thursday, 4 October 2012 at the Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Doors open at 18h30 and the evening starts at 19h00. Secure, covered parking is available. Ticketing opens in early August and R5 from every ticket sold is donated to the FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Johannesburg.
News of adventures and videos of talks from previous FEAT events, as well as those from FEAT Canada, are available on the FEAT website at www.featsa.co.za. You can also follow FEAT on Twitter (@AdventureFEAT) and on Facebook (FEATSA).
FEAT is made possible by the support of its sponsors – Black Diamond, Capestorm and Land Rover. These adventurous companies are not only behind FEAT but also many adventurers and expeditions. Go Multi and Getaway magazines promote FEAT as well as outdoor activities, sports and athletes.
