Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University PE team take overall honours at annual students surfing championships

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University team from Port Elizabeth won the overall title at 2012 SA Students Championships which was completed in good surf and fine weather at Victoria Bay on the Southern Cape coast last Friday. The defending champions posted a total score of 43,492 thanks to a fine performance by the men and women from the Bay.
The University of Cape Town team came second with 37,080 points and Varsity College came in third with 33,580 points. The University of Stellenbosch finished fourth, Rhodes University were fifth, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology sixth and NMMU George came seventh.
NMMU PE also took honours in the Men’s division beating Varsity College into second place. The University of Cape Town team were third with Stellenbosch University fourth, Cape Peninsula University of Technology fifth, Rhodes University sixth and NMMU George seventh.
The University of Cape Town team won the Women’s division with Stellenbosch University second, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University PE third, Rhodes University fourth and Varsity College fifth.
Shawn Dennis of Varsity College won the Men’s final beating Clinton Gravett of NMMU PE into second place. UCT’s Phillip Visagie was third and the 2011 champion, Brad Beck of NMMU PE, came fourth.
Tammy Lee Smith successfully defended her 2011 title and made it a double for Varsity College when she took honours in the Women’s final. Jessica Lee of the University of Cape Town was second with Lisa Mace of the University of Stellenbosch third and Katarina Kern of the University of Cape Town fourth.
At the completion of the annual event USSA officials selected the 2012 USSA Team which is made up of eight men and four women.
The Men are Shawn Dennis ( Varsity College), Phillip Visagie (UCT), Clinton Gravett (NMMU), Brad Beck (NMMU), Kane Bennewith (Varsity College), Josh Saunders (NMMU), Daniel Wilson (UCT) and Scott Le Fevre (Varsity College). The Women members of the team are Tammy Lee Smith (Varsity College), Lisa Mace ( Stellenbosch University), Jessica Lee (UCT) and Katarina Kern (UCT).

The annual students surfing championships were presented by USSA, supported by Southern Cape Boardriders Association and sanctioned by Surfing South Africa.
Surfing South Africa is recognized by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the International Surfing Association (ISA) as the governing body for the sport in South Africa.
