FEAT in October, Award Application and Current Adventures
The date for FEAT this year is set as Thursday, 4 October 2012. The event will again be in Jo'burg at the Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein. I'll only let you in on the speakers in a few weeks but for now I'll just say that again there's a bit of this and a bit of that. There are some names you'll recognise and others you won't. There will be tales of adventures on foot, water and bicycle. Some of these journeys took days; others took weeks. What they all have in common is that they're feats; fabulous feats. Tickets will only be available from early August.
Details of the new FEAT Award application process is now available - www.featsa.co.za/feat-award. FEAT Award will contribute up to R10,000 to making your adventure dream happen. Your adventure can be of any duration and in any location (not just in SA). We only consider human-powered activities (no 44, dirt bike, jetski or similar) and we're not interested in organised events or commercial / guided trips. What we're looking for are original, creative and inspirational adventures. Simple and fun works too. Applications must be in by Wednesday, 29 August 2012 and your adventure must take place between 5 October 2012 and 15 September 2013.
I'm delighted to welcome Land Rover to the FEAT family. Capestorm and Black Diamond too are FEAT sponsors, as they have been since FEAT began. Sponsors really are critical to this event and without them FEAT just could not happen. Aside from FEAT, these companies are also incredibly supportive of athletes enabling them to accomplish feats. I hope to introduce you to some other new family members in the next newsletter.
So, let's get caught up on adventures that have been on the go since the last newsletter:
Howard Fairbank is on the move again. Howard and Imtiaz Moosa recently completed a canoe trip through the wilderness of Quantico Park in Ontario, Canada. Imtiaz, with whom Howard paddled the Yukon River last year, is blind and thus the name of their expedition, Vision Quest. Howard is now on his way to Siberia for a three-month solo cycling adventure.
In early May Cameron Bellamy and fellow athletes taking part in the Ubunye Challenge completed a long-distance cycle (1,407km) across the island of Great Britain. This self-made challenge consists fo three ultra-distance 'events' in the disciplines of cycling, swimming and ocean rowing. Cameron and Sam Wells are currently waiting for the weather window to open so that they can swim the English Channel sometime between now and 9 July.
Davey du Plessis' Amazon adventure has begun. Davey is on a solo adventure to travel from the source of the Amazon river to the mouth, where it opens into the Atlantic. His first stage is a bike-and-hike to the the summit of Mt Msimi (source), then a cycle to the river put-in and then some 4,500km of paddling to the sea. Quite an undertaking! He expects this to take four to six months to complete.
This past Friday night Martin Dreyer blasted into the finish of the Freedom Challenge Race Across South Africa having set a new record of 10 days 16 hours and 40 minutes for this 2,300-kilometre ride. Previous record holder and race winner (2010 and 2011) Alex Harris was only a few hours off Martin (also breaking his previous record); the two had been separated by no more than seven hours throughout the race! Martin's new record took almost two days of Alex's 2011 record of 12 days 15 hours and 30 minutes.
Later this month a team of climbers are heading to Pakistan to climb the Trango Towers. They aim to make an ascent of the Nameless Tower and to find new routes in Trango and the surrounding ranges. This will be a six-week expedition. The team includes Alard Hufner, Douard Le Roux, Robert Powell, Shelley Hufner, Adam Liebenberg, Voytek Modrewski and Neil Grimmer.
An arctic sailing-climbing adventure is currently underway with four South Africans - Steve Bradshaw, Andrew Porter, Clinton Martinengo and Dave Glass - on board. This is a "7000km journey through the Arctics NW passages to climb some fairly remote walls". Two weeks ago they completed the first stage of their adventure - crossing the Atlantic to reach Greenland. They're now climbing interesting faces and boulders that they've spotted as they sail around the coast.
In early April Subusiso Vilane completed his Three Poles Challenge quest when he reached the North Pole. The three poles are the North Pole together with the South Pole and Mt Everest. As Sibusiso has the Seven Summits in the bag, he scores an Explorers Grand Slam too.
Do you know of any other adventures? Let me know about them by dropping me a note at feat@featsa.co.za.
Thanx
Lisa
