A RUN AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILD ABUSE
Vital Health Foods, in association with Run/Walk for Life WP Athletics Club, will host the fourth annual Vital Run in aid of the PATCH Helderberg Centre for Abused Children on Saturday, 7 December 2013. The event, once again taking place at Lourensford Wine Estate, drew approximately 4 300 enthusiastic finishers last year. This year, the organisers hope to see even more cross the finish line in order to surpass the 2012 total of R47 000, which was donated to PATCH.
The Vital Run is the type of event that perfectly illustrates the vision of Vital Health Food’s managing director, George Grieve. On 9 August 2013, he announced that going forward Vital Health Foods was no longer going to watch the statistics on abuse pile up, and that the company would join in the fight against women and child abuse in South Africa.
Through the relationship with PATCH, Vital Health Foods was made acutely aware of the horrific statistics associated with women and child abuse. In order to make a tangible difference, Vital Health Foods launched the R1 makes a difference
campaign. This is the pledge that will be made: for every Vital supplement purchased, Vital Health Foods will donate R1 to the Vital Foundation – which has been created to support organisations in the fight against women and child abuse.
All the money collected from the Vital supplement sales will help build a wall of protection against women and child abuse. The campaign hopes to inspire and empower the public to make a difference in the lives of victims. With the correct support, the wounds of abuse can start to heal.
The Vital Foundation aims to help facilitate that healing process, providing access to expert information on women and child abuse and the services and assistance that are available through its portal: www.vitalfoundation.co.za
. This makes a wide range of resources from various organisations, specialists and activists visible to all South Africans and the world through one platform. “We aim to integrate and co-ordinate services in a holistic way to support those affected by this scourge and those committed to fighting for a safe and healthy society,” says Grieve.
“We realise that we all deserve healthy families and healthy homes and we are a passionate company that cares deeply about the wellness of our communities,” says Grieve. “If the Foundation’s resources can help a couple of families and victims to a better life we would be thankful. Come and make a stand, by running and making a difference.”
Matthew Grossett, CEO of Run/Walk for Life, believes the event should be a highlight on the Western Cape events calendar. “With Vital Health Foods and Run/Walk for Life collaborating, the day is sure to be filled with family, fun and fitness. It’s all about looking after yourself, so you can enjoy life. That’s why Vital Health Foods and Run/Walk for Life are the perfect team to host this event.”
Participants are able to enter the 21 km run, 10 km run, 10 km walk or the 4 km fun run/walk.
- The 21 km and 10 km races are both off-road scenic routes. For the 21 km runners can expect a 3 km climb at the start, followed by contouring jeep tracks and farm road below the foot of the Helderberg Mountains, passing the Brinksburg Dam. The second half is mainly downhill on easy forest and farm road. The route’s surface is definitely not suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
- The initial 5 km of the 10 km routes are rough on foot but worth the effort. The course then contours back, with a comfortable downhill and level gravel road to the finish.
- The fun run course will follow a different route through the beautiful estate which is relatively flat and easy, and suitable for all ages.
Medals will be handed out to all who finish within the cut-off time and expect lucky draws at the prize giving. After completing the course, participants can enjoy the ever-popular festive family market which boasts breakfast delicacies and tasters. The Market is child friendly.
Participants can pre-enter online at www.vitalrun.co.za
before 22 November 2013, or find entry forms inserted in the November issue of Runner’s World. Late entries will be accepted on the morning of the run between 05:00–06:15 at the venue.
