IRONMAN South Africa

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2014, the IRONMAN South Africa is staged in Nelson Mandela Bay, an area surrounded by world-class tourist destinations that showcase the abundance of wild beauty indigenous to South Africa and the Eastern Cape. The race serves as the only IRONMAN event on the African continent.

The 1.9km swim begins at Hobie Beach and includes two loops of 1.5 and 2.3 kilometers respectively. The 180.2km bike course consists of a three-loop ride starting out along the coast towards the city. Athletes will then climb for 10 kilometers to reach the highest point of 183 meters above sea level. Gentle rolling hills occur to the turn-around point at the 34 kilometer mark, and then at the 40 kilometer mark it's downhill to the coast. The route is then relatively flat along the coast back to transition at 60 kilometers. The 42.2km run will be a three loop course along Marine Drive. It's a very fast, flat route through the top gate of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and out through the bottom gate, heading towards transition. There are 50 qualifying slots for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, HI.
