A well-marked long (18km) and a shorter, very scenic, flat 5.5km trail run for families, youngsters and walkers will be offered.
The 18km Goukamma Traverse will start remotely in the Goukamma Nature Reserve, traverses the reserve from east to west and finishes in Sedgefield on the Village Green. The 5.5km Family Trail Run will start and finish from the Village Green in Sedgefield and takes in the very scenic fisherman’s trails all along the edge of the Sedgefield Lagoon.
A secret gem and trail runners paradise is the pristine and spectacular Goukamma Nature Reserve, a Cape Nature Reserve to the East of Sedgefield.
The Traverse run starts from the Goukamma River pont on the Eastern side of the reserve and will take runners along single and jeep track, above and through ancient dune systems, steep and flat sections, through cool Milkwood forests and a flourish of fynbos and give spectacular panoramic views of the ocean to the south and of some of the wide vleis and lakes to the north. It’s quite simply a ‘WOW’ run through some of the Garden Routes’ most pristine beauty! No water points en route, all participants to please carry their own water. Strictly no littering- dnf if caught!
With the Slow Fest being all about stepping away from the mad rush, the rat race, watching the clock, the constant buzz and crowds of bigger cities and towns, so too is the Goukamma Traverse brought to you by Sedgefield Spar.
Great Spar cash vouchers up for grabs!! Vivo Barefoot will also be sponsoring buffs to the first 100 entries, caps to the first 30, prizes for winners plus some lucky draw UltrAspire Hydration products.
Directions: The 18km run starts remotely from the western side of the Goukamma River after crossing the river via a wide pont [GPS - 34°03.860 S / 22°56.529 E]. The Goukamma Reserve is accessed from east via the Buffels Bay Road, from the N2 between Sedgefield and Knysna.
The Trail Start: To get to the Traverse trail run start, turn right off the N2 onto the Buffels Bay Rd and travel about 8km. Turn right into Goukamma Reserve- a blind turn-off to your right as you have the first view of the lagoon and sea ahead of you. Continue driving to the parking area near the ablution block and park. Follow the dirt road and signs to the registration area and river pont. Once registered, groups of 30 people at a time will cross the Goukamma River on the wide pont. The race will start from the western side of the river.
