[ Ice Swim Africa 2012 ]

2012 has been a choppy year for our swimming events, however, we are getting back on track, slowly but surely and with some help from other swimmers. We are finding new sponsors that will allow us to carry on with our wonderful madness.

We have 3 weeks before we plunge into the icy waters of Fraserburg. If you are not fit, sorry, it is too late. However, if you are around the year swimmer and your fitness level is good - you can do it.

Dont worry too much about the swim now, focus on your training. Use any opportunity to get cold, in the water. Focus on your breathing when you do anything in the cold, from swimming to cold shower. Maintain calmness and teach yourself to handle the cold. Dont let it break you, dont get too tight, relax and let it in.

Once the COLD knows you are not scared, not intimidated and even love it - it will warm you up!

This swim will be for those that have just done the Endurance and want to complete the mile swim.

All swimmers must go directly into the medical tent after exiting the water to be attended to by medical staff who will discharge you once you have recovered.

One emergency boat will be on the water should a swimmer need to be pulled out and lifesavers on several rescue craft (boards) will paddle alongside swimmers.

The route will be set close to the shore should you wish to pull out  at any stage. Make sure you have very warm clothes at hand for directly after the

swim. The event should be over by 2pm.

Most importantly, get is as much very cold water training before the event. This is vital for acclimatisation purposes. Ensure you are totally medically fit and don’t take risks if you are not.

Leave Fraserburg at your leisure.

Kindly note:

All meals and accommodation for swimmers’ accounts.

Bring very warm (and waterproof in case of rain/snow) clothes, particularly for after your swim.

Be flexible on swim day – adverse conditions may lead to a delayed start.

Fires will be set up at the water’s edge for friends and family.

Hot chocolate will be available for swimmers at the dam, and on sale for others. Food will also be on sale at the dam.

This is a rural town and there are virtually no amenities at the dam — be prepared to rough it and to enjoy the traditional Karoo

lifestyle!
